CNG Triton XXIX, lot 1061

This specimen was lot 1061 in CNG Triton XXIX (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $3,981.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY, Mantova (Duchy). Vincenzo I Gonzaga. 1587–1612. AR Ducatone. Draped and cuirassed bust right / Crowned and double-collard coat-of-arms. Iridescent toning, cleaned, a few marks and scuffs, test cut, edge splits. EF. Rare." Vincenzo I Gonzaga, a man of mediocre talents, is remembered today for his patronage of composer Claudio Monteverdi and the painter Peter Paul Rubens. Ducatone for this ruler include Dav-8291/KM MB224 (dated 1590), Dav-8291/KM MB234 (dated 1589 and 1599), Dav-8292/KM MB243 (dated 1595), Dav-8295/KM MB225 (shown here) and Dav-8296/KM MB226 (bust with scepter). Vincenzo had a mint in Casale, in the marquisate of Montferrat, which also struck ducatone such as Dav-8262.
