Sincona sale 6, lot 1490
Casale about 1494, in the northern part of Montferrat

The first specimen was lot 20489 in Ponterio sale 161 (Chicago, August 2011), where it sold for $3,737.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Casale. Tallero, ND (1612-26). F[e]rdinando Gonzaga (1612-26). Nicely toned. NGC AU-55." The second specimen was lot 1490 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 2100 CHF (about US$2,584 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"ITALIEN Mantova Ferdinando Gonzaga I. 1612-1626. Tallero o. J., Casale. Gekröntes Wappen umgeben von der Kette des Erlösersordens. Rv. Kreuz von Jerusalem. Selten. Schöne Patina. Gutes sehr schön. (Italy, duchy of Mantua, Ferdinando Gonzaga, 1612-26, tallero without date, Casale mint. Obverse: crowned arms; reverse: Jerusalem cross, rare, nice toning, good very fine.)"

Casale, originally part of the Marquisate of Montferrat, passed thru various hands before becoming an estate of the Dukes of Mantua. On the extinction of that duchy, Casale passed to Savoy in 1713. It is today part of Italy. All of the talleros and ducatones issued therefrom are rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 25-27 g, silver. The second specimen is 22,31 g.

Catalog reference: Varesi 325. Rossi, Gonzaga 123, KM-71; CNI II-54; Dav-3870.
