Casale 1617-CG ducatone Dav-3868
This specimen was lot 1344 in Bolaffi Spa Auction 43 (Turin, June 2023) where it sold for 3,400 EUR (about US$4,407 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted,
"Monete di Zecche Italiane, Casale, Ferdinando Gonzaga (1612-1626) - Ducatone 1617 - Diritto: busto corazzato del Duca a destra con collare alla spagnola - Rovescio: San Giorgio a cavallo verso destra nell'atto di trafiggere il drago - Rara - Variante con rosette invece dei punti nella legenda del rovescio. Meravigliosa patina iridescente, SPL - Corredata di cartellino di antica collezione. (Casale, Ferdinand Gonzaga, 1612-26, ducatone of 1617. Obverse: ruffed bust of the duke right; reverse: mounted St. George lances the dragon. Rare. variety with rosettes punctuating the reverse legend. Marvelous iridescent patina, with an old collector's tag.)"
Casale, originally part of the Marquisate of Montferrat, passed thru various hands before becoming an estate of the Dukes of Mantua. On the extinction of that duchy, Casale passed to Savoy in 1713. It is today part of Italy. All of the talleros and ducatones issued therefrom are rare. This design was also struck in 1622.
