This specimen was lot 1168 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Mantua. Scudo, ND (1630). Carlo I Gonzaga (1627-37). PCGS EF-45 Secure Holder. Minor porosity present. Nice strike. Lovely pearlescent gray toning. In a remarkable state of preservation considering its type and age. Choice and attractive." This type was struck during the siege of the War of the Mantuan Succession, 1629-30. The duchy of Mantua was ruled by the Gonzaga family until 1707 when the dynasty lapsed. It became a Hapsburg holding, then part of the Napoleonic empire, then back to Austria, then finally part of Italy, where it remains.
