Bolaffi Auction 42, lot 207

This specimen was lot 207 in Bolaffi Spa Auction 42 (Turin, December 2022) where it sold for 900 EUR (about US$1,145 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted,

"Monete di Zecche Italiane-Casale, Carlo I Gonzaga Nevers (1627-1637) - Ducatone ossidionale 1628 - Zecca: Casale - Diritto: legenda su 4 righe entro cartella ornata di fregi - Rovescio: stemma coronato - Estremamente rara - Usuali debolezze di conio, altrimenti BB. (Casale, Charles of Gonzaga-Nevers, 1627-37, siege ducatone of 1628, Casale mint. Obverse: legend in four lines in ornate cartouche; reverse: crowned arms. Usual weak strike, otherwise very fine.)"

Careful study shows a weak "R XII" above the cartouche, marking this example KM 50.1/Dav-3871. Others lack this mark of value (KM 50.3/Dav-3871B). Casale, originally part of the Marquisate of Montferrat, passed thru various hands before becoming an estate of the Dukes of Mantua. On the extinction of that duchy, Casale passed to Savoy in 1713. It is today part of Italy. All of the talleros and ducatones issued therefrom are rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.16 g, silver, this specimen 22,87 g.
