Bolaffi Auction 43, lot 1341

This specimen was lot 1341 in Bolaffi Spa Auction 43 (Turin, June 2023) where it sold for 800 EUR (about US$1,037 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted,

"Monete di Zecche Italiane, Casale, Vincenzo I Gonzaga (1587-1612) - Ducatone 1601 - Diritto: busto corazzato del Duca a destra con collare alla spagnola - Rovescio: San Giorgio a cavallo verso destra nell'atto di trafiggere il drago - Rara - q.BB - Corredata da cartellino di antica collezione. (Casale, Vincenzo Gonzaga I, 1587-1612, ducatone of 1601. Obverse: ruffed bust of the duke right; reverse: mounted St. George lances the dragon. Rare, about very fine, with old collector's tag.)"

Casale, originally part of the Marquisate of Montferrat, passed thru various hands before becoming an estate of the Dukes of Mantua. On the extinction of that duchy, Casale passed to Savoy in 1713. It is today part of Italy. All of the talleros and ducatones issued therefrom are rare.
