Casale 1597 ducatone Dav-8262
This specimen was lot 1237 in Inasta E-Auction 109 (San Marino, Italy, November 2023), where it sold for 600 EUR (about US$771 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted,
"ZECCHE ITALIANE - CASALE - Vincenzo I Gonzaga (1587-1612) - Ducatone 1597 R Ex asta Il Ponte n. 6 del 23/09/1982, meglio di MB, Ex asta Il Ponte n. 6 del 23/09/1982. (Casale, Vincenzo Gonzaga I, 1587-1612, ducatone of 1597. Rare, about Fine.)"
This type was struck 1591-99 and, altho scarce, is common compared to the other exceedingly rare crowns of this state. The design was also struck in 1601 where it is catalogued as Dav-3862. Casale, originally part of the Marquisate of Montferrat, passed thru various hands before becoming an estate of the Dukes of Mantua. On the extinction of that duchy, Casale passed to Savoy in 1713.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 25,46 g.
