from the Stack's Bowers 2019 ANA sale, lot 21240

This specimen was lot 21240 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $7,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Mantua (Mantova). 1614. Ferdinando Gonzaga. NGC EF-40. VERY RARE. Date in Roman numerals on the reverse. A well struck (for type) example with bold, fully readable legends and date. Some light golden tone ads to the overall eye appeal of this example. From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II." This type is listed for 1612, 1614 and 1616 and is rare even by Mantuan standards. It was accompanied by a due doppie (Fr-553), a quadruple doppie (KM 42, Fr-552), and a 6 doppie (KM 55, Fr-551). When the last duke died in 1707, the duchy was claimed by the Hapsburgs.
