Mainz 1763-M 5 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 2506 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €80 (about US$105 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF EMMERICH JOSEPH VON BREIDBACH-BÜRRESHEIM, 1763-1774. Die Münzstätte Koblenz. 5 Kreuzer (1/24 Konventionstaler) 1763, Koblenz. Münzmeister Gotthard Martinengo. Wardein Elias Gervais. Mit nach r. gewandtem Münzzeichen. Basilisk nach l., den rechten Fuß auf das vor ihm stehende, mit Kurhut bedeckte Mainzer Radschild gelegt//Mit Kurhut bedecktes Monogramm auf Postament mit Wertzahl 5, darunter die Signatur • M •. Kl. Randfehler, vorzüglich. Erworben 2012 von Wolfgang Rittig, Schwelm. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Emmerich Joseph of Breidbach-Bürresheim, 1763-74, five kreuzer or 1/24 convention thaler of 1763, Coblenz mint. Obverse: With to r. clever mint mark. Basilisk to the left, the right foot placed on the Mainz wheel shield standing in front of him, covered with an electoral hat; reverse: capped monogram on a pedestal with the value 5, underneath the signature "• M •". Minor edge defects, extremely fine.)"
Emmerich Joseph von Breidbach zu Bürresheim (1707-74) was also bishop of Worms after 1768. He is noted for implementing educational reform in his diocese. A considerable variety of low denomination coins exists for his reign. The thaler, which had been ninety kreuzer in the seventeenth century, was raised to 120 kreuzer in the eighteenth century and renamed from reichsthaler to convention thaler.
