Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1226

This specimen was lot 1226 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, MAYENCE, Archevêché, Emerich Joseph von Breitbach-Bürresheim (1763-1774), AR demi-Taler, 1765. D/ B. à d., vêtu d'un manteau d'hermine. R/ Armoiries tenues par deux basilics. Slg. Beau à Très Beau. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Emerich Joseph von Breitbach-Bürresheim, 1763-74, silver half thaler of 1765. Obverse: bust right with ermine mantle; reverse: arms supported by two basilisks. Fine - Very Fine.)"

The town was annexed to France in 1795, along with the rest of the Rhineland; the archbishopric's remaining territory was mediatized and partitioned in 1803. This half thaler is one of several rare issues of the 1760's. It accompanied a quarter thaler (KM 353) and single thaler (KM 347).
