Mainz 1764-EG thaler Dav-2424
This specimen was lot 4805 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €700 (about US$905 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Emerich Joseph von Breitbach-Bürresheim, 1763-1774. Konv.-Taler 1764, EG, Mainz. Seltener Jahrgang. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Erworben von der Münzenhandlung Paul Habelt, Berlin. (archbishopric of Mainz, Emerich Joseph von Breitbach-Bürresheim, 1763-74, convention thaler of 1764, Mainz mint. Rare date, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This thaler of 1764-65 is scarce but not rare. A ten kreuzer (1/12 thaler) was also struck in 1764.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 27.97 g.
