Künker sale 404, lot 2479

This specimen was lot 2479 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €170 (about US$223 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF JOHANN FRIEDRICH KARL VON OSTEIN, 1743-1763. Die Münzstätte Erfurt. Ku.-3 Pfennig 1760, Erfurt. Ohne Signatur. Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Hermelin und Ordenskreuz//[drei Ringe übereinander] 3 [drei Ringe übereinander] / PFENNIG S • M / 1760. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion WAG Online 91, November 2018, Nr. 977. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, John Frederick Charles of Ostein, 1743-63, copper threepence of 1760, Erfurt mint, without initials. Obverse: bust right in ermine mantle and cross; reverse: value and date. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Johann Friedrich Karl was also bishop of Worms. He supported the losing side in both the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years War and the reparations extorted from him by the emperor bankrupted the archdiocese. Numerous pfennigs exist for 1760, including KM 304 (shown here), 306, 308, 324, 325 (arms obverse), 326, 327 (monogram obverse), 328, 329, 330 and 331. This type was also struck in 1759.
