Künker sale 404, lot 2480

This specimen was lot 2480 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €100 (about US$131 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF JOHANN FRIEDRICH KARL VON OSTEIN, 1743-1763. Die Münzstätte Erfurt. Ku.-Pfennig 1760, Erfurt. Ohne Signatur. Rad in gekrönter Kartusche, dahinter Schwert und Krummstab gekreuzt, die links von einem Windhund gehalten wird//[drei Ringe übereinander] 1 [drei Ringe übereinander] / PFENNIG / S [drei Ringe übereinander] M / 1760. RR Sehr schön. Erworben 2023 von Manfred Olding, Osnabrück. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, John Frederick Charles of Ostein, 1743-63, copper penny of 1760, Erfurt mint, without signature. Obverse: wheel in a crowned cartouche, crossed sword and crozier behind, supported by a greyhound to the left; reverse: value and date. Very rare, very fine.)"

Johann Friedrich Karl was also bishop of Worms. He supported the losing side in both the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years War and the reparations extorted from him by the emperor bankrupted the archdiocese. Numerous pfennigs exist for 1760, including KM 294, 296, 297, 316 (shown here) and 317.
