Scotsman Midwest summer sale, lot 53
Magdeburg 1627 taler rev Sc-53.jpg

This specimen was lot 53 in Scotsman's Midwest Summer Sale (St. Louis, July 2012), where it sold for $____. The catalog description noted, "Germany - 1627-PS Magdeburg Taler VF. OBV: young lady over city gate. REV: Crowned double-headed eagle. Marvelous neon-blue toning over very attractive, smooth dove-grey patina." Separate issues for Magdeburg ended in 1680 when the bishopric was absorbed by Brandenburg. This type, issued 1623-30, is the most common thaler for the city of Magdeburg but it is still triple the price of a contemporary issue from Saxony or Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 255, Dav-5516.
