Magdeburg 1629-PS thaler Dav-5516
This specimen was lot 32037 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Magdeburg. Taler, 1629-PS. Magdeburg Mint. Free City (in the name of Ferdinand II). NGC MS-65. A colossal Gem, this stunning and exceedingly exceptional city gate issue stands as the sole finest in the PCGS census, glistening with a great deal of lustrous brilliance and pleasing cabinet toning." Separate issues for Magdeburg ended in 1680 when the bishopric was absorbed by Brandenburg. This type, issued 1623-30, is the most common thaler for the city of Magdeburg but it is still triple the price of a contemporary issue from Saxony or Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.
