Brandenburg-Ansbach 1629 thaler Dav-6238
This specimen was lot 484 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (New York, October 2010), where it sold for $488.75. The catalog description[1] noted,
"GERMAN STATES. BRANDENBURG-ANSBACH. Friedrich II, Albrecht, and Christian, 1625-1634. Taler, 1629. Three half length busts of three brothers in ornate dress. Names in Legend, small arms below divides date. Rv. Ornate Helmeted, 12-fold Arms. Struck on a crudely prepared flan, with sprues that were not removed after flan was cast. Attractive iridescence and very well struck with even the most minute details nearly fully formed. A great addition to any world crown collection. Choice Extremely Fine."
This type was issued 1629-31 and is listed as rather common. It comes not from the Electorate of Brandenburg (later the Kingdom of Prussia) but from Brandenburg-Ansbach, a Hohenzollern enclave west of Bavaria and neighboring Nuremburg. A half thaler also exists.
