CNG Lissner sale, lot 499

This specimen was lot 499 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $2,722.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA, Colonial. British India. Madras Presidency. 1653-1835. AV Pagoda. Struck 1801-1815. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 67. A gem uncirculated example of this important colonial type." The Madras mint, a facility of the British East India Company, minted pagodas under license from the Mughal emperor since the seventeenth century. This is the first milled type. The assets of the East India Company were transferred to the British government after the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and the mint was closed in 1869.
