Sincona sale 87, lot 2849

This specimen was lot 2849 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$673 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"POLEN, Sigismund August, 1545-1572. 3 Groschen 1565, Vilnius für Litauen. Selten. Polierte Platte. Gereinigt. (kingdom of Poland, Sigismund August, 1545-72, three groschen of 1565, struck at Vilnius for Lithuania. Rare, Choice Proof (sic), Cleaned.)"

In the sixteenth century, Lithuania comprised the northeast half of the kingdom of Poland whose monarch ruled the two regions separately.
