This specimen was lot 31317 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Riga. Stephan Bathory 3 Groszy (Trojak) 1581 XF40 NGC, Riga mint, A well-preserved and attractively toned example of this scarce issue, well-centered with an evenly applied strike. Ex. Künker (June 2010, Auction 170, Lot 2520)." In the sixteenth century, Lithuania comprised the northeast half of the kingdom of Poland, whose monarch ruled the two regions separately. Riga, the capital, was also a Hanseatic town and managed to maintain considerable autonomy.
