This specimen was lot 5161 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $1,265. The catalog description [2] noted, "Liberia. 25 Cents, 1896-H. Laureate head left. Reverse: Value and date within wreath. Beautiful iridescent toning. NGC graded Specimen 65." This type is from a series struck in 1896 by the Heaton mint for Liberia. Other denominations included one, two, ten and fifty cents. Altho denominated as a decimal coin, the weight standard is very close to that of a British shilling.

Recorded mintage: 15,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 5.8 g, 0.925 fine silver.
