Sincona sale 66, lot 1169

This specimen was lot 1169 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$395 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Jülich-Kleve-Berg, Herzogtum | misc, Johann Wilhelm, 1690-1716. 2/3 Taler 1691, Mülheim. Sehr schön. Leicht gereinigt. (Germany, duchy of Julich-Cleve-Berg, John William, 1690-1716, two-thirds thaler of 1691, Mulheim mint. Very fine, Slightly cleaned.)"

Altho the auctioneers catalog this as an issue of Julich-Cleve-Berg, that assemblage of duchies only existed for 1521-1609. Following the extinction of the local dynasty, the state was partitioned between Brandenburg (which obtained Cleve and Mark) and Pfalz-Neuberg (which obtained Julich and Berg). Johann Wilhelm, whose portrait appears here, was also count of Pfalz-Neuberg in upper Bavaria. This gulden was issued with eight-fold arms (KM 83) or nine-fold arms (shown here) and is rare either way.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 17.10 g.

Catalog reference: KM 95, Noss 795. Dav-588.
