UBS sale 85, lot 330

This specimen was lot 330 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 1900 CHF (about US$2,168 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND, Jülich-Kleve-Berg, Herzogtum, Philipp Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg, 1653-1679. Dukat 1676, Mülheim. Auf die Vermählung seiner Tochter Eleonore Magdalena Theresia mit Kaiser Leopold I. Drapiertes Brustbild mit grosser Perücke nach rechts. Rv. Strahlende Sonne über drei Zeilen Schrift und der Jahreszahl. Lt. gew. Gutes sehr schön." (Duchy of Jülich-Kleve-Berg, Philip William of Pfalz-Neuburg, 1653-79, Mülheim mint. On the marriage of his daughter with the emperor Leopold. Draped bust with full wig to right; reverse: shining sun over three lines of text and the date. Good very fine.)

This type is expensive but less rare than other ducats from this locale. Like many commemoratives, it was likely saved more than regular issue coinage. After the lapse of the native dynasty in 1609, Jülich, Cleve and Berg on the lower Rhine were partitioned among Pfalz-Neuberg and Brandenburg. The area was annexed to Prussia in 1815.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.50 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3,47 g.
