CNG Lissner sale, lot 557

This specimen was lot 557 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $10,285. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY, Regno d'Italia (Napoleonic). Napoleon I. 1805-1814. AR 5 Lire. Milano (Milan) mint; differenti: pomegranate and inverted cup. Luigi Manfredini, engraver general. Dated 1812 M. Large letters. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65. Gem UNC with just a hint of light toning splashed across the coin. The only 5 Lire of Napoleon ever graded. A true wonder coin. Purchased from Frank Lapa, February 1971." This coin was struck in Milan for Napoleon's kingdom of Italy which lasted 1804-1814. The five lire piece matched the French five francs and was struck in some numbers 1809-14 at Milan, Venice and Bologna. This specimen sold for eight times the catalog value.
