This type was struck 1984-85 at Jerusalem for Israel. This was the second largest denomination struck for circulation during the coinage reform of 1980-85. It depicts an old coin from the ancient kingdom of Israel prior to the Roman conquest. In 1982, US$1 = 20.9 sheqalim. In 1985, the coinage was reformed again with one new sheqel = 1,000 old sheqalim. The new denomination is still in use altho inflation grinds relentlessly at its value.
