This specimen was lot 4425 in Goldberg sale 84 (Los Angeles, January 2015), where it sold for $199.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Israel. 5 Lirot, 1963. For the 15th anniversary of independence. Seafaring. NGC graded MS-65." Of the dozens of commemoratives minted and marketed by the government of Israel, this is perhaps the most popular. Massive influx of aid from the United States fueled inflation and coinage reforms in 1960, 1980 and 1985.
Recorded mintage: 5,960 plus 4,495 proofs.
Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 34 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-39.
