The first specimen was lot 24124 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRELAND. "Ormonde" Crown, ND (1643-44). The Great Rebellion (1642-1649). PCGS VF-35 Secure Holder. Rotated double strike. Somewhat crudely struck as usual, toned and attractive. From the Brighton Collection." The second specimen was lot 21113 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRELAND. "Ormonde" Crown, ND (1643-44). Dublin Mint. Charles I (1625-49). PCGS EF-40. KM-63. Commonly called 'Ormonde money' from James Butler (1610-88), first duke of Ormond and leader of Charles's army in Ireland. Usual weak strike on a crude planchet. Plain "S" on reverse. Light attractive tone with remnants of underlying luster. Ex: Stack's Bowers August ANA 2014, lot# 1160." The Earl of Ormonde, as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, issued crowns (shown here), half crowns, shillings, sixpences, groats, threepences and halfgroats on behalf of the doomed Charles I.
