SB125-33244r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33244 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $4,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRELAND. Crown, ND (1649). Ormonde Coinage. Charles II. PCGS F-12. Of EXTREME RARITY, with perhaps a single-digit surviving population. Struck in the name of Charles II following the death of Charles I at the tail end of the Irish Confederate Wars and the beginnings of the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. Weak in parts, with a natural planchet flaw on the denomination side, but overall quite satisfactory and full weight, with no signs of clipping. Impressively pedigreed to the Bridgewater House Collection, formed in London, England in the 17th and 18th centuries. From the Richard August Collection. Ex: Superior Galleries (12/1992) Lot #1506. Ex: Dr. Barry Dunham (Spink - 3/1985) Lot #253. Ex: Bridgewater House Collection (Sotheby's - 6/1972) Lot #576." James Butler, duke of Ormonde (1610-88) and a Protestant, was the leader of the royalist coalition in Ireland. He was unable to prevent the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland and was repudiated by Charles II, destroying what little unity remained among the Irish rebels. He spent 1650-60 in exile, returning to Ireland with the Restoration, altho his relationship with Charles II was marked by conflict.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
