Iraq 1990 50 fils
This specimen was lot 861 in Stephen Album sale 30 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2018), where it sold for $141. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAQ: 50 fils, 1990/AH1410, PCGS Specimen pop-4/5, total 10, PCGS graded Specimen 66, ex King's Norton Mint Collection." This is the final date of a type previously struck 1969-81. In 1991, Saddam Hussein embarked on his ill-fated attempt to invade and conquer Kuwait, whereupon economic sanctions would have limited his ability to contract with foreign mints for coinage. Besides this 50 fils, the SCWC reports a 250 fils (KM 147), a 5 dinars (KM 171) and a 10 dinars (KM 172) for 1990 but nothing thereafter.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specification: 5.54 g, copper-nickel, 23 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-128.
