This specimen was issued by Iraq as part of the F.A.O. series. The date palm obverse appears on five, ten, twenty-five, fifty and hundred fils coins of the 1967-1990 period. Iraq, long a part of the Ottoman Empire, was seized by the British at the end of World War One but then granted independence under a local monarchy which ruled until 1958. A non-F.A.O. five fils (KM 125a) was also issued for 1975. In 1975, Iraq was dominated by a military regime but Saddam Hussein had not yet taken over.
