This specimen is the first coin issued by Iraq as part of the F.A.O. series and the first coin of that denomination. The date palm obverse appears on five, ten, twenty-five, fifty and hundred fils coins of the 1967-1990 period. Iraq, long a part of the Ottoman Empire, was seized by the British at the end of World War One but then granted independence under a local monarchy which ruled until 1958. In 1970, Iraq was dominated by a military regime but Saddam Hussein had not yet taken over.
