Iraq 1972 25 fils
This specimen was lot 860 in Stephen Album sale 30 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2018), where it sold for $141. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAQ: 25 fils, 1972/AH1992, PCGS Specimen pop-2/4, total 8, PCGS graded Specimen 66, ex King's Norton Mint Collection." This type was struck 1969-81. All dates are common. The date palm obverse appears on five, ten, twenty-five, fifty and hundred fils coins of the 1967-1990 period. Iraq, long a part of the Ottoman Empire, was seized by the British at the end of World War One but then granted independence under a local monarchy which ruled until 1958. In 1972, Iraq was dominated by a military regime but Saddam Hussein had not yet taken over.
