Sincona sale 85, lot 1139

This specimen was lot 1139 in Sincona sale 85 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$539 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Muzaffar al-Din Shah, 1313-1324 AH (1896-1907). 1 Shahi sefid 1324 AH (1906/1907 AD), Tehran Mint. Lion & Sun type. Very rare. NGC MS62. From the Kian collection, auction SINCONA 49, October 2018, lot 146. From the Mesrob Abgarians collection, Glendale, 1987. Second finest certified by NGC."

The shahi, or fifty dinars, was supposed to be superseded by a copper-nickel coin (KM 961) but continued to be struck until the end of the regime. This date is not supposed to exist; the SCWC comments, "...a total of 58,000 [shahis] were reported struck in AH 1322, 1232 and 1324, but none are known with these dates; the specimens are either struck from old dies or were undated types".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.80 g, 0.900 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 966 (unlisted date).
