This specimen was lot 4242 in Goldberg sale 80 (Los Angeles, June 2014), where it sold for $2,703. The catalog description[1] noted, "India - British. 1 Rupee, 1938 (c). Silver. First Head. George VI. Deeply toned. NGC graded Proof 63." This rupee was struck at the Calcutta mint just before World War Two. Circulating coins (KM 555) were produced in 1938 at Bombay only. Calcutta also produced a few rupees in copper-nickel (KM A556); these are also scarce. In 1940, the coin was reduced to 0.500 fine silver and ceased production in 1945.
