Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74185

This specimen was lot 74185 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/2 Rupee, 1938-(B). Bombay Mint. George VI. NGC MS-63+. An impressive and handsome Choice Mint State example, this wholesome piece offers much allure and appeal." This half rupee was struck at the Bombay mint just before World War Two. Calcutta struck only proofs in 1938. In 1940, the coin was reduced to 0.500 fine silver and ceased production in 1945.

Recorded mintage: 2,200,000 plus proofs, a slightly better date.

Specification: 5.83 g, 0.917 fine silver.
