Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73734

This specimen was lot 73734 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 2 Annas, 1928. Bombay Mint. George V. NGC MS-65. A robust Gem that is tied with just one other example at the top spot of the NGC census, this example radiates with tremendous brilliance and an elegant overall look." The two annas, originally a silver coin (KM 515), was switched to copper-nickel in 1918 and struck to this design until 1936. Similar two annas were struck for George VI until 1947. The administration also attempted to circulate copper-nickel four and eight annas but failed. Both Bombay and Calcutta struck two annas in 1928.

Recorded mintage: 4,876,000, a better date.

Specification: 5.62 g, copper-nickel, 25 mm diameter.
