Sedwick Treasure Auction 28, lot 1765

This specimen was lot 1765 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "Calcutta, India (British), 1/2 rupee, George V, 1926, NGC MS 64. Bright surfaces, mostly non-toned with a hint of red color on the reverse." This half rupee was struck at the Calcutta mint some years after the end of World War One. It was never minted in the immense numbers of the George V rupees but it is not rare, being struck steadily 1912-30, 1933-36. The minting of rupees effectively ceased after 1922.

Reported Mintage: 4,027,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 5.83 g, 0.917 fine silver.
