India 1909(c) 1/4 rupee
This specimen was part of lot 33869 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), which it sold for $3,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "British India. Edward VII 7-Piece Certified Restrike Proof Set 1909-(c) PCGS, 1) Rupee - PR62, S&W-7.45; 2) 1/2 Rupee - PR63, S&W-7.69; 3) 1/4 Rupee - PR63, S&W-7.90; 4) 2 Annas - PR62, S&W-7.112; 5) 1/4 Anna - PR64 Red, S&W-7.149; 6) 1/2 Pice - PR64 Red, S&W-7.204; 7) 1/12 Anna - PR64 Red, S&W-7.228. Calcutta mint. A most appreciable Proof set and the first of this date we've had the pleasing in offering, each imbued with near-Choice to near-Gem preservations and incredibly glossy appearances as is typical with these Restrikes." This is a rare date for the quarter rupee as none were struck for circulation. The Calcutta mint struck all the other dates in substantial quantities while the Bombay mint struck this type in 1910 only.
