India 1892 1/12 anna
The first specimen was lot 71659 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $115. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/12 Anna, 1892-(C). Calcutta Mint. Victoria. NGC MS-65 Red Brown. Though classified as red-brown, this Gem presents surfaces with tremendous amounts of red originality, while some cartwheel brilliance augments its appeal." The second specimen was lot 413 in Sincona sale 75 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 5,000 CHF (about US$6,069 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "INDIA | British India | East India Company, Victoria, 1837-1901. 1/12 Anna 1892, Calcutta. Proof. Restrike. Off-metal strike in gold. Von grösster Seltenheit. NGC PF62. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (Of the highest rarity, Magnificent condition.)" This type was struck 1877-1901; the last Bombay issue was in 1890. The weight was reduced in 1906. We don't know when the off-metal strike was produced.
