Sincona sale 75, lot 414

This specimen was lot 414 in Sincona sale 75 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 7,000 CHF (about US$8,497 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA | British India | East India Company. Victoria, 1837-1901. 1/2 Pice (2 Reas) 1892, Calcutta. Proof. Restrike. Off-metal strike in gold. Von grösster Seltenheit. NGC PF62. (Of the highest rarity.)" This type was struck 1877-78 and 1885-1901 in moderate quantities and was worth one-eighth of an anna. Calcutta was the sole producer. It is common altho the off-metal strikes, made for collectors, are rare.

Recorded mintage: 4,774,000 plus proofs and restrikes.

Specification: 3.0-3.3 g, copper, 21 mm diameter; also silver or gold restrikes, this specimen 7.46 g.
