Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 1153

This specimen was lot 1153 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. British India. Mohur, 1891-(C). NGC MS-62. Mintage of only 16,524 pieces." This type was issued at Calcutta and Bombay 1877-1891 in a bewildering array of varieties, including proofs, off-metal strikes and restrikes. The type is the largest gold denomination and was originally a rupee struck in gold. It is distinguished from the type issued 1862-75 by the obverse legend, "VICTORIA EMPRESS" instead of "VICTORIA QUEEN."
