Heritage sale 3026, lot 25105

This specimen was lot 25105 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $4,993.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Victoria gold Mohur 1889-(C), MS63 NGC, well-struck details with full mint luster, moderate handling on the obverse." This type was issued at Calcutta and Bombay 1877-1891 in a bewildering array of varieties, including proofs, off-metal strikes and restrikes. The type is the largest gold denomination and was originally a rupee struck in gold. It is distinguished from the type issued 1862-75 by the obverse legend, "VICTORIA EMPRESS" instead of "VICTORIA QUEEN."

Recorded mintage: 15,000 plus restrikes.

Specification: 11.66 g, .917 gold silver, .343 troy oz AGW.
