India 1888(c) mohur
This specimen was lot 31823 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $3,720. The catalog description[1] noted, "British India. Victoria gold Mohur 1888-(c) MS62 NGC, Calcutta mint. Type A Bust. Younger bust with V on ground line. A glowing selection displaying a profound depth to the peripheral areas of the fields and a delightful current of crimson and amber tone that runs across the surfaces. Tied for second-finest seen by NGC to-date. From the Hamilton Collection of British India Coins." This type was issued at Calcutta and Bombay 1877-1891 in a bewildering array of varieties, including proofs, off-metal strikes and restrikes. The type is the largest gold denomination. It is distinguished from the type issued 1862-75 by the obverse legend, "VICTORIA EMPRESS" instead of "VICTORIA QUEEN."
