This specimen was lot 73701 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/2 Pice, 1888-(C). Calcutta Mint. Victoria. NGC MS-64 Red Brown. A lustrous and charming near-Gem, this wholesome piece offers strong luster and much in the way of retained beauty. Much mint red is yet present on the flan." This type was struck 1877-78 and 1885-1901 in moderate quantities and was worth one-eighth of an anna. Calcutta was the sole producer. It is common altho the off-metal strikes, made for collectors, are rare.
