Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 52355

This specimen was lot 52355 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Rupee, 1862-(M). Madras Mint. Victoria. NGC MS-62. A most impressive Rupee from the Madras Mint, the most elusive and desirable of the British Indian Mints, this example displays an unlisted die pairing for the Madras mint with the telltale 31.0 mm diameter for the mint. Still bright and handsome, we expect many competitive bids for this piece." This date, the first after the abolition of the East India Company, was struck in large numbers 1862-73 in dozens of varieties at Madras (shown here), Bombay and Calcutta.

Specification: 11.66 g, 0.917 fine silver, 30.7 mm diameter, milled edge. This specimen 31.0 mm diameter.
