This specimen was lot 1408 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $646. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/2 Pice, 1862-(c). NGC PROOFLIKE-64 RD. Restrike." This type was issued at Calcutta and Bombay 1862 and 1875 in a bewildering array of varieties, including proofs, off-metal strikes and restrikes. It is distinguished from the type issued 1877-1901 by the obverse legend, "VICTORIA QUEEN" instead of "VICTORIA EMPRESS."
Recorded mintage: 96,943,000 plus more from Bombay and Madras. The products of the three mints are distinguishable by their diameter.
