India 1862(c) 1/12 anna
This specimen was lot 1407 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $588. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/12 Anna, 1862-(c). NGC PROOFLIKE-64 RD. Restrike." This denomination, the smallest of the copper issues, was struck at the Calcutta, Bombay and Madras mints in 1862 and 1874-76. As the 1862 is the most frequently seen, it seems logical to suppose it was struck with a frozen date 1862-73. Readers are invited to submit suggestions as to how to distinguish the issues of the various mints, which did not use mintmarks. This twelfth anna was 1/192 of a rupee.
Recorded mintage: 2,502,000 (Calcutta), 2,999,000 (Bombay), 40,487,000 (Madras).
Specification: copper, 17.4-18 mm diameter (second specimen 17.4 mm).
Catalog reference: KM 465.
