The first specimen was lot 22561 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Rupee, 1862-(B). NGC MS-63. Type H/2, 2/4. A frosty coin with attractive cartwheel luster." This type was issued at Madras, Calcutta and Bombay 1862 and 1874-76 in a bewildering array of varieties, including proofs, off-metal strikes and restrikes. The type is not rare but this variety earns a premium. It is distinguished from the type issued 1877-1901 by the obverse legend, "VICTORIA QUEEN" instead of "VICTORIA EMPRESS."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.66 g, 0.917 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-473.1; S&W-4.77.
