15.3 mm diameter, therefore Calcutta mint

This denomination, the smallest of the silver issues, was struck at the Calcutta, Bombay and Madras mints in 1862 and 1874-76. As the 1862 is the most frequently seen, it seems logical to suppose it was struck with a frozen date 1862-73. The various mints, which did not use mintmarks, vary by diameter. This two annas was one-eighth of a rupee.

Recorded mintage: 29,653,000 (Calcutta), 21,037,000 (Bombay), 4,202,000 (Madras).

Specification: 1.48 g, 0.917 fine silver, 15.3 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 469.
