Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 56339
SB823-56339r.jpg

This specimen was lot 56339 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "HUNGARY. 20 Kreuzer, 1848-KB. Kremnica Mint. Ferdinand V. PCGS MS-63. Single-year issue during the War of Independence." The regular issue, KM 422, with Latin legends, was struck 1837-48 and is common. We don't know if this type, with Magyar legends, was struck by the rebels but likely so. It was accompanied by a similar ten krajczar (KM 421). The Hungarian revolt of 1848-49 nearly toppled the Hapsburgs and only Russian intervention saved the regime. Ferdinand, an epileptic, abdicated during the crisis.

Recorded mintage: unknown plus 14,972,000 of KM 422.

Specification: 6.68 g, 0.583 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-432.
