Hungary 1848 ducat Fr-227
This specimen was lot 3507 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €600 (about US$775 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Revolution in Ungarn, 1848-1849. Dukat 1848, Kremnitz. Mit magyarischer Umschrift. 3,44 g Feingold. GOLD. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (kingdom of Hungary, revolutionary government, ducat of 1848, Kremnitz mint, Magyar legend. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This ducat was issued by the Kossuth rebels during their insurrection against the Hapsburg regime. Disunity among the rebels who made little effort to conciliate the non-Magyar minorities in Hungary and Russian intervention caused the revolt to collapse and Kossuth went into exile. This one year type is actually more common than the regular issue of 1837-48 (Fr-222).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.50 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW, 21 mm diameter.
